It's over. It's all over. The bottle poppin', the Halloween costumes, the scantily clad coeds: Done. Johnny Manziel is quitting Twitter. So his 330,000 Twitter followers are just going to have to live vicariously through some other bro, now. Marshall Henderson or somebody.
The Heisman Trophy winning Texas A&M quarterback told ESPN he has had it. Had it with the attention. Had it with the little controversies. Had it with the media. Twitter, it seems, is the only place Manziel can't win. So he's done.
"I've kind of just shut it all off," Manziel told ESPN. "With how the media has been with me for a while, I just shut everything off. As of [Monday], I said I was done with it for however long. It's fun to have, but it can get to be distracting at points."
It was a magical run, not unlike last football season. Manziel was never funny on Twitter. He wasn't insightful, either. He was neither thoughtful nor a loose cannon. He used his Twitter account for little other than documentation. He was basically a reality TV show, played out one twitpic at a time, taking outsiders inside the world of a Heisman Trophy winner. He rubbed shoulders with rappers and models. He went to sweaty clubs. He wore a Scooby Doo costume for Halloween. He got a Longhorn logo temporarily tattooed on his rib cage. He rescued a stray cat.
It was candy, all of it. And, man, it looked like he was having fun.
But it's over now. Maybe he'll come back, but probably it will never be the same. He's too famous. And unlike some famous people, his fame doesn't feed on itself. He isn't merely famous for being famous, so he doesn't need to feed the beast. He's famous for playing football. There was a moment — a long moment — when just about all anybody knew about Johnny Manziel was that he played football. He didn't talk to the media, his parents didn't talk to the media and most people barely knew what he looked like with his helmet off, much less his shirt.
Maybe it's better that way.
