Jerry Jones liked what he saw from Brandon Weeden in the preseason opener last Thursday in San Diego. The Dallas Cowboys' backup quarterback started, played the entire first half and completed 13 of 17 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Jones views Cowboys offensive play-caller Scott Linehan as a good match for what Weeden does best. Jones said former Browns president Mike Holmgren told him that Cleveland asked Weeden to do "way too much" after drafting him in 2012.
Holmgren said the Browns should've had Weeden throwing more quick drops because he was holding the ball too long.
"All quarterbacks, with the exception, I guess, of [Troy] Aikman, come into the league holding the ball too long," Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "So [Weeden] didn't get the benefit, at least the way Mike saw it, of the kind of early snaps. Linehan's doing that. It's really effective for us. I think we may have something here."
The Cowboys signed Weeden, 30, in March to a two-year contract.
