Jerry Jones: 'Almost assuredly' Romo won't be playing in the third quarter in Miami

Jerry Jones said during a Monday radio interview that Tony Romo would probably play about as many snaps Saturday in Miami as he did last Saturday against Baltimore.

On Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he and his staff had not yet had those discussions.

Are Jones and Garrett on the same page?

"Yes, we are," Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "We're completely on the same page. The facts are that Jason doesn't check with me on where he dots his i's and where he says his b's, and I sure don't check with him."

Romo was on the field for 16 plays against the Ravens with two being negated because of penalties. Saturday's game against the Dolphins is considered to be the Cowboys' dress rehearsal for the regular season and the last preseason game Romo will play in.

In last year's second-from-last preseason game, also Romo's final tune-up, the Cowboys' franchise quarterback played the entire first half.

While Jones wouldn't confirm Romo would get that much playing time Saturday, he did say Romo "almost assuredly" won't be on the field in the third quarter.

"Let's just all step back and ask ourselves: Can we afford to have him take some snaps with how many days before we play a game, two weeks, three weeks before we play a game? We don't want to risk him getting [injured], four days, five days before we play San Francisco," Jones said. "We got time, so you want some snaps. We know it would be good to have him with this group and having different colored jerseys to play against. All of that would be good, good for the team. And it will happen.

"Now, whether or not it happens to the tune of 15 plays, 13 plays or 20 plays has everything to do with how those series go. The other night we got out there with that ball for probably ... all but a minute of that first quarter. We were moving the ball, blocking good, protecting well. We had a couple of breakdowns, but still, it wasn't time to take Tony out. We got some work and he got work he wanted to go on. That's the way you look at it.

"I'm not so sure that anybody knows exactly how many snaps [he's going to get]. I can tell you that almost assuredly, he won't be in there in the third quarter. But by the same token, I can tell you that you're going to see him, and you'll see him in the first half. How much of it, I really don't know."
