Jeffrey Jordan leaving UCF basketball program
The UCF basketball team is down to just one Jordan brother after Jeffrey Jordan, the son of NBA legend Michael Jordan, abruptly left the program this week.
The school announced the move in a news release Saturday night.
"We wish Jeff nothing but the best in the future," UCF head coach Donnie Jones said in the release. "We appreciate his contributions to our program and he will always be a member of the UCF basketball family."
The school's release did not indicate why Jeffrey Jordan was leaving the program, but in a statement, Jordan cited "personal reasons" for his abrupt departure.
"I thank coach Jones for the opportunity to be a part of the UCF basketball family," Jordan said. "I wish the team and coaching staff much continued success."
Jordan's younger brother, Marcus, is still with the team. He scored 12 points in the Knights' 81-63 win over East Carolina on Saturday night. Jeffrey did not travel with the team for the game in Greenville, NC.
Jeffrey Jordan played three seasons at Illinois before transferring to UCF last May to play his final college season alongside his brother. He sat out the entire 2010-11 season because of transfer rules, and this year was his first on the court alongside Marcus.
The elder Jordan averaged 2.7 points and 1.8 assists in 21 minutes per game this season for the Knights. His best game of the season came on Dec. 13, when he scored nine points on 3-for-4 shooting and had six assists in a 77-65 win over North Carolina A&T.
Marcus Jordan is the team's leading scorer with an average of 17.2 points per game. UCF (12-3, 2-0 Conference USA) next plays Wednesday at home against Houston.
