Jaime Garcia goes back on DL; Cardinals recall Tim Cooney

Left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia (left groin strain) has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 4, and left-handed pitcher Tim Cooney has been recalled from Class A Peoria, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Sunday.

Garcia, who is is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts, was sore after throwing a side session Saturday. He suffered the injury running the bases June 24.

Manager Mike Matheny also announced Sunday that Cooney and Triple A Memphis lefty Tyler Lyons are slated to draw the starting assignments for the Cardinals in Tuesday's split doubleheader at Chicago.

Cooney, who started for the Cardinals last Thursday, is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts for St. Louis this season. The Pacific Coast League All-Star is 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 14 starts for Memphis.

Lyons is 2-0 with a 5.09 ERA in five starts for St. Louis this season, winning each of his last two (June 13 vs. Kansas City and June 19 vs. Philadelphia).  He's 5-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts at Memphis.
