J.D. Martinez leaves Wednesday's game with low back tightness

DETROIT -- Just when J.D. Martinez was starting to turn things around at the plate, he has to leave the game.

Martinez had two hits in two at-bats in Wednesday night's game but then was lifted for pinch hitter Rajai Davis in the sixth inning.

The Tigers announced that Martinez had low back tightness and is considered day-to-day.

"I don't know the seriousness of it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He took some swings down in the cage, said it didn't bother him too much. It is the recurrence of an issue he had earlier, so we don't want it to linger. We certainly need his bat in the lineup."

Martinez went through an 0-for-25 skid but appeared to have come out of it in the last few games, going 5-for-12 lately.
