International Star moves forward on Derby trail with Lecomte win

International Star rallied to beat War Story by 2-1/2 lengths Saturday in the $200,000, Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds Race Course.

The New York-bred International Star, ridden by Miguel Mena, has 21 points toward entry in the Kentucky Derby. He has two victories in seven starts, also winning the Grey Stakes at Woodbine in October.

International Star ran a mile and 70 yards in 1:43.62, earning $120,000 and paying $20.40, $8.80 and $5.20. Owners Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey also won the 2014 Lecomte Stakes with Vicar's In Trouble.

War Story returned $7.20 and $4.60, and Tiznow R J paid $4.20 to show.

Eagle, the 3-1 favorite, finished seventh.

The Lecomte Stakes was the first of three Fair Grounds prep races for the Kentucky Derby. The Risen Star Stakes is next month and the Louisiana Derby in March.
