Indians sign first-round draft pick Frazier, two others
The Cleveland Indians today announced the signing of outfielder Clint Frazier, the 5th overall selection in the first round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, along with two others. Frazier, 18, recently graduated from Loganville High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he batted .485 in his senior campaign (47-for-97) with 17 homers, 45 RBI, 56 runs scored, a .561 on-base pct and a 1.134 slugging pct in 32 games. Following the season, the 5’11” right-handed hitter was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year.
Entering the draft he was rated the 4th overall prospect - and top high school player - by Baseball America & MLB.com. His selection marked the first high school outfielder selected by the Indians since Manny Ramirez in 1991.
As a junior at Loganville in 2012, he hit .424 with 24 home runs, earning 2012 All-American honors from Aflac and Under Armour while leading the Loganville Red Devils to the AAAA Georgia state championship. In all, Clint hit a school record 63 home runs throughout his prep career. Frazier will report to the Goodyear, AZ Player Development Complex in the coming days and will begin his professional career with the rookie Arizona League Indians.
The team also signed left-handed pitcher Thomas Pannone, selected in round nine (no. 261 overall).
The freshman, 6'1", 185-pound left-hander went 6-2 with a 1.84 ERA (11 ER/53.2 IP) through 10 games this season. Pannone was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2012 First-Year-Player Draft by the Chicago Cub as an outfielder out of Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island. The Cranston, RI native took 2012 Northeast all Region 1st Team honors after his senior season in 2012. The Indians signed right-handed pitcher Kerry Doane, selected in round 24 (no. 711 overall).
Doane, 21, is 5'11", 175 pounds and attended Eastern Tennessee State.
