Indiana school's 30th straight swimming title breaks record
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The girls swimming team for Carmel High School in Indiana cruised to its 30th consecutive state title on Saturday, breaking the national record for the longest streak in any sport.
Olympic Trials qualifier Claire Adams led the way. The senior won the 100-yard freestyle, the 100 back and was part of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams that also captured state titles.
Last year, the Greyhounds tied the record that was set by the boys' swimming team at Honolulu's Punahou High School from 1958-86. That was the school President Barack Obama attended.
As usual, it wasn't even close.
The swimmers from the northern suburb of Indianapolis won nine of 12 events to finish with 438 points. Hamilton Southeastern was second with 193.5 points.
