MOHALI, India (AP) A resilient half-century by injured Haseeb Hameed helped England score 236 in its second innings on Tuesday, setting India a modest target of 103 to win the third test.
At tea on day four, the hosts were 33-1. Parthiv Patel was unbeaten on 16 not out, while Cheteshwar Pujara was batting on 13.
Joe Root made a stubborn 78 in the morning session to keep up England's hopes of setting a challenging India run chase, and Hameed - who was unable to bat on Monday due to injury - came in at No.8 to guide the tail toward a semi-competitive total.
Chris Woakes (30) put on 43 runs for the eighth wicket with Hameed before he was dismissed caught behind after India took the second new ball.
Mohammed Shami (2-37) hit Woakes on the helmet in the 84th over, but the batsman was unhurt. He was dismissed off the next ball, fending another short delivery.
Two balls later, Adil Rashid (0) was caught at fine leg, pulling another short delivery from Shami.
Hameed then changed gears as he was running out of partners. He had scored only 17 runs off the first 110 balls he had faced, but scored 33 off the next 37 to reach his second test half-century.
He put on 41 runs for the tenth wicket with James Anderson (5), who was run out by a throw from the outfield.
Hameed's 59 not out included six fours and a six in his 156-ball stay spanning just short of three hours.
Ravichandran Ashwin (3-81) and Jayant Yadav (2-21) were the pick of India's bowlers.
In reply, England claimed the early wicket of Murali Vijay (0) to raise hopes of a victory push before Patel and Pujara put India back in command.
