* The Rays got a clutch RBI double from pinch-hitter Luke Scott in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, but a couple of missed defensive opportunities allowed the Mariners to retake the lead and leave Friday night’s game with a 6-4 victory. Read More

* With his innings limit on the horizon -- his next start will be his last this season -- Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez put on perhaps his best performance of the season on Friday against the Nationals. Read More

* Storm Johnson rushed for three touchdowns and quarterback Blake Bortles added one through the air to lead UCF past Florida International on Friday night and give the Knights their second 2-0 start since 1999. Read More

* Jose Fernandez was electric again on Friday, taking a no-hitter through five innings and striking out nine Nationals’ batters in seven innings to continue his dominance at home and lead the Marlins to a 7-0 victory. Read More

* The Tampa Bay Lightning will open up training camp next week at Tampa Bay Times Forum with 62 players, many of whom are already playing in their rookie camp in Coral Springs. Read More

* Prior to Friday’s game in Miami, Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson extolled the virtues of Marlins’ phenom Jose Fernandez, saying the rookie right-hander should be the no-doubt National League rookie of the year. Read More

* It was no surprise, but the Buccaneers officially ruled Carl Nicks out for Sunday’s opener against the Jets. Gabe Carimi, acquired from the Bears in the offseason, has taken the most reps at left guard and appears to be the likely candidate to step into Nicks’ spot. Read More

* Rookie backup cornerbacks Will Davis and Jamar Taylor have been ruled out of the Miami Dolphins' opening game Sunday at Cleveland because of injuries. Read More

* Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert is recovering from a fracture in the thumb on his throwing hand, and even though he has returned to practice, head coach Gus Bradley says they don’t yet know if the third-year man will be able to go for Sunday’s opener at home against the Chiefs. Read More

* The old Orange Bowl, where the Gators and Hurricanes last met in Miami a decade ago, is gone. Marlins Park, the modernistic home of the Miami Marlins, now sits on the site where the Gators last defeated the Hurricanes at home 28 years ago. This storied rivalry is in danger of going the way of the Orange Bowl. There are currently no talks between the schools about continuing a rivalry that was born in 1938 after Saturday's game at Sun Life Stadium. Only time will tell if the rivalry is truly dead. * The 12th-ranked Gators are 3-point favorites against the unranked Hurricanes (No. 24 in the coaches' poll). Florida beat Toledo and Miami defeated Florda Atlantic in their respective season openers. How big is the fight at high noon among the Miami fans and media? There's been little to no talk this week of an impending NCAA announcement regarding possible penalties -- the discussion has been all Hurricanes vs. Gators. Read More
