* Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis will have a Florida city named after him. For one day. The City of Treasure Island, Fla., by special proclamation of Mayor Bob Minning, will change its name to Revis Island, Fla. on Thursday.  The city is located about 30 miles southwest of Tampa. * Clay Buchholz allowed three hits over five innings in his first start since early June and the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 on Tuesday night. Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner David Price (8-8) lost his third straight start despite giving up just two runs and three hits in eight innings. The left-hander struck out nine. Read More

* Julio Teheran, working on 10 days' rest, overcame a rough first inning and pitched into the seventh to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Tuesday night. Teheran  gave up three runs in the first, then none after that, and he left with a 4-3 lead. Read More

* Diana Nyad on Tuesday defended her 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida to skeptics who questioned whether she got into or held onto a boat during part of the journey. Nyad said she swam without holding onto any of the boats or people accompanying her. Read More

* The Miami Heat have signed forward Eric Griffin and center Justin Hamilton, the team announced Tuesday. Griffin averaged 6.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in 10 games for Miami's 2013 Summer League team. Hamilton, who was drafted in the second round (45th overall) by Philadelphia in the 2012 NBA Draft, was acquired by the Heat on draft night, along with a future first-round draft pick, in exchange for Arnett Moultrie (27th overall). * Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez, a top candidate for NL Rookie of the Year, is approaching the 170-inning limit set by the team. He'll make his final start Wednesday against Atlanta. Read More

* A bullpen session for Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jesse Crain went well Tuesday, and the team will wait until Wednesday to determine his next step. Crain, on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, threw 36 pitches at Tropicana Field before the Rays opened a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. The session included change-ups and sliders, and he described his progress as "going in the right direction." Read More

* Randy Starks said he was just joking around. But he hasn't gotten any laughs out of it. The Miami Dolphins defensive tackle was caught on camera flashing an obscene gesture with his middle finger after recording a sack late in Sunday's 23-10 win at Cleveland. Starks on Tuesday said what he did was wrong. Read More

* For Ray Allen, it was the summer of The Shot. Everywhere Allen went this offseason, whether it was Connecticut or Florida or anywhere else, The Shot was the only thing people asked the Miami Heat guard about. Understandable, given that his 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left tied Game 6 of the NBA Finals to save the Heat back in June, helped send the title series against San Antonio to an ultimate game, and will surely go down in playoff lore. * Matt Jones’ first carry of the season is what the Gators envision the 6-foot-2, 226-pound sophomore running back doing on a regular basis: bulldoze his way past the line of scrimmage, dart through a running lane and pick up 9 yards. Making his second career start and first as Florida’s featured back -- he started in a special formation package to open last season’s game at Tennessee -- Jones rushed 18 times for 47 yards in his 2013 debut. * The Miami Dolphins, who face four of the NFL's top quarterbacks in the next month, figured it would be wise to come up with something fast. So defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle created a package named "speed." Read More

* The Florida Panthers are turning to their cubs. When Florida opens training camp Wednesday, a significant number of the team's top prospects will be competing for significant roles, not just roster spots. "It's wide open," Tallon said. "We're going to put the best 23 players we can [on the ice] regardless of age. Whoever plays the best from here on in, through training camp and all the preseason games -- seven preseason games -- will tell us who is going to stay and who is going to go and who is most capable of handling the pressure mentally." * The Tampa Bay Lightning enter training camp seeking a new identity. In June, the Lightning cut ties with Vincent Lecavalier, their team captain and long-time offensive centerpiece. While the move was done for financial reasons, it is hard to overlook the era it ends -- one in which Tampa Bay iced a prolific scoring machine, often at the expense of protecting its own end. * Going helmet-to-helmet with instate rival Florida was not the toughest task overcome by the Miami Hurricanes so far in this young season, at least according to one player. "They were physical but nothing more physical than what we do every day in practice," redshirt sophomore running back Dallas Crawford said after Miami's 21-16 win on Saturday. "Our defense is huge now compared to the other years. We hit every day in practice; Coach (Al) Golden is all about physicality. We are used to it. Read More
