Hurricanes' Scott sits out against Valparaiso
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Miami played without leading scorer Durand Scott in the Hurricanes' first-round NIT victory over Valparaiso on Wednesday night.
Scott was notified before the game that he will serve a six-game suspension for receiving impermissible benefits during the school's previous coaching staff. The suspension also will include the game Scott missed in Miami's loss to Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament Friday.
"There was a release put out this afternoon, I don't know anything more than that and just refer to the release," Miami first-year coach Jim Larranaga said after the Hurricanes' 66-50 win over Valparaiso. "We talked to Durand to let him know what the circumstances were. He handled it with great class."
Scott's suspension will run through Miami's stay in the NIT and extend to next season if the Hurricanes fail to reach the final. In addition to the suspension, Scott must pay to charity the value of the received benefits.
