There have been some pretty dramatic baseball games this postseason, but none as riveting as the fictional one-game playoff from the classic 1989 film Major League.
It’s tough to top the high drama of the Indians’ showdown with the Yankees and Jake Taylor’s savvy gamesmanship to seal the victory in the bottom of the ninth.
There’s only one way the finish could have been better—if we’d had the 21st century second-screen viewing experience of following along on Twitter.
Top of the ninth inning
Manager Lou Brown (James Gammon) brings in Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) to get the final out of the top of the ninth inning. Vaughn exits the bullpen to his signature "Wild Thing" entrance song, which sends Jacobs field into a frenzy.
Vaughn faces Clu Haywood (Pete Vuckovich) with a man on second base. Haywood won the triple crown (.341 with 48 home runs and 121 RBIs) and was 2-for-2 in his career against Vaughn with two home runs.
Bottom of the ninth inning
Willie Mays Hayes singled off Duke Temple and got himself into scoring position with a stolen base.
Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger) calls his shot to left field.
Temple tries to get him to back off the plate with a pitch high and inside. Taylor falls to the ground without getting hit and does not brush himself off.
Taylor awaits the pitch before squaring up to bunt.
Taylor reaches first base safely and allows Hayes to come around from third base to score.
The Indians are headed to the World Series.
And of course...
Now let’s just forget the sequels ever existed.
