Hornets steal Pistons' spot, will pick ninth in draft
Despite ending a 10-year playoff drought, the Hornets have found their way into a lottery pick.
Charlotte will pick ninth after acquiring the selection from the Pistons during Tuesday night's draft lottery. Detroit had to give up the draft spot if it fell outside the first eight spots.
The Hornets had a 17.5 percent chance of acquiring a pick and had they not taken Detroit's spot this season, they would have received it next season unless the Pistons won the lottery.
It was a punctuation to a big day for Charlotte, which earlier Tuesday formerly changed the team's name from Bobcats to Hornets.
"Today is a great day for professional basketball in Charlotte and the entire Carolinas," chief operating office Fredi Whitfield said. "Today, we complete a task that has never been accomplished before -- bringing a name back to its original market after it left and was used elsewhere.
"Today, the Charlotte Hornets name is officially back home."
