The left knee surgery Texas left-hander Derek Holland had last week did involve a microfracture procedure, the team said Tuesday.
Holland had the surgery to repair torn cartilage underneath the kneecap. The microfracture procedure was done to stimulate blood flow, which allows for quicker healing.
Holland said that scar tissue was also removed during the procedure. The Rangers expect Holland to miss approximately half of the 2014 season.
The Rangers have a history of players coming back from microfracture surgery on their knees. Scott Feldman had microfracture surgery in 2010 and pitched in just 11 regular season games for Texas in 2011. Outfielder Marlon Byrd had microfracture surgery following the 2008 season and had his best season as a Ranger in 2009.
