Holland getting extra time between starts
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers have decided to give left-hander Derek Holland some extra time between starts and Holland won't start again until May 19 in Houston.
Holland (3-2, 3.86 ERA) won the second game of Thursday's doubleheader in Baltimore.
"This way Holland will get his little break like we did with Neftali (Feliz)," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Nothing is physical. Nothing is wrong."
The Rangers did the same thing with Feliz earlier this season, taking advantage of an off day to give him extra rest between starts.
The Rangers will start Colby Lewis Tuesday followed by Yu Darvish and Matt Harrison. Neftali Feliz will start Friday's opener in Houston with Holland going Saturday.
Holland will be available out of the bullpen this week.
"I'm not too worried about it," Holland said. "That's fine. If that's what they want to do that's what they want to do. My job is just to be ready to pitch. I'll keep doing what I usually do and get myself ready for Houston."
Holland said he'll likely do extra work on the side to keep himself ready for his next start.; He's pitched well in his last two starts, allowing one earned run in 7 1/3 innings against Cleveland before pitching six innings and allowing no earned runs in a 7-3 victory over Baltimore.
The Rangers are still undecided on who will start Monday's game against Kansas City. The likely choice is right-hander Scott Feldman as long as he's not needed this weekend against Los Angeles.
Beltre plan
Third baseman Adrian Beltre may be back in the field for Sunday's game against Los Angeles if the field conditions are good.
Beltre said he thinks he needs about another week until he's at 100 percent. That didn't stop him from collecting an infield single in Friday's win. While Beltre said he wasn't going full speed on that play, manager Ron Washington doesn't believe him.
"He smelled that hit," Washington said. "That's what happens to baseball players when they smell hits."
Torrealba update
Texas catcher Yorvit Torrealba wasn't in Saturday's starting lineup but the Rangers think he's fine after getting hit in the helmet by Albert Pujols' bat in Friday's game.
Torrealba passed all the team's tests following the game and was re-evaluated Saturday.
Torrealba never lost consciousness and Washington said the first thing he told his catcher when he checked on his was that they don't make players like they used to.
