High School football notebook: Week 2
Narbonne head coach Manuel Douglas said his team’s performance against Long Beach Poly was dominant. It was, without question, a humbling defeat for the Jackrabbits falling 56-0 to Narbonne. And, the Gauchos (2-0) didn’t even need an out of this world performance from star quarterback Troy Williams. The Washington commit and reigning City Section Player of the Year did rush for three scores, but didn’t have to do much in the air, throwing for just 151 yards.
Narbonne has state bowl aspirations. Crenshaw is the only City Section team to appear in a state bowl game. Nevertheless, Poly (1-2) head coach Raul Lara was impressed with what he saw, calling the Gauchos “the real deal,” according to the Daily Breeze.
Sometimes winning hurts. At least it did for St. Bonaventure head coach Todd Therrien last Friday. He didn’t line up against the tough Redlands East Valley defense but that didn’t stop him from getting a concussion. Therrien was kicked in the head during the Seraphs’ 18-7 win while trying to stop a player going out of bounds.
That was the first of a four-game road trip for St. Bonaventure (3-0). The first three games will have them traveling 774 miles round-trip. This Friday they’ll go to Atascadero (2-1), followed by a visit to Santa Margarita (3-0) and the road trip will conclude with a Marmonte League game at Westlake (3-0).
Redlands East Valley (1-1) will travel to Vista Murrieta (2-0) for the Game of the Week on FOX Sports West, which can be seen at 8:30pm on Friday.
Despite being ranked as a top-five team in the state, the Broncos still have some questions that need answering. They only return one starter on offense from last year’s Inland Division championship team. Defensively however, head coach Coley Candaele says defensive back Treshon Broughton’s effort has been “extraordinary.” Broughton is a transfer from Tustin. He’s joined at Vista Murrieta by another Tustin transfer, Greg Hoyd. The linebacker has two interception returns for touchdowns in the first two games of the season for the Broncos.
“He’s been in the right place at the right time,” said Candaele of Hoyd.
All eyes will be on the Servite offense on Friday night. The Friars (1-1) will host Edison (2-0) at Cerritos College in their home opener. Offensive line coach Jim O’Connell will take over as offensive coordinator for Matt Mitchell who was let go last week.
The Friars are coming off of a bye after their come from behind win over Rancho Cucamonga on Sept. 1. When asked how the offense looks, head coach Troy Thomas said “great” in a text message.
After an 0-2 start, Elijah Asante picked up his first win as the head coach of St. Paul. The Swordsmen (1-2) defeated La Habra 34-20. They have a bye this week.
Don’t look now but Buena Park running back Deven Boston is leading the state in rushing. The 6’1” 205-pound junior is averaging 274.7 rush yards per game and has a total of 824 after the Coyotes first three games. Boston has 14 rushing touchdowns on the season. The Coyotes (3-0) will get a huge test when they host JSerra (2-0) of the Trinity League on Thursday.
Week 2 Top Performers:
St. John Bosco (3-0) quarterback Josh Rosen completed 18-of-26 passes for 312 yards and a school record seven touchdowns.
St. John Bosco wide receiver A.J. Holman caught four of those touchdown passes from Rosen ---all in the first half, which is also a school record. Holman is a transfer from Trinity League rival Orange Lutheran. The Braves defeated Santa Fe (1-2) 61-8.
Oak Park (2-1) defensive lineman Justin Green returned two interceptions for touchdowns and recorded a safety in the Eagles 39-14 win over Simi Valley (1-1).
A Legend Passes
The world of high school suffered a major loss with the passing of former Carson head coach Gene Vollnogle. He won eight L.A. City Section titles at Carson and two more at rival Banning.
“He was the epitome of coaching,” said former Banning head coach Chris Ferragamo, who also played for Vollnogle at Banning, to the Daily Breeze.
He was 81 years old.
