The Miami Heat endured a winless two-game stay in the New York metropolitan area.
The Heat rallied from a 14-point third quarter deficit before losing to the Brooklyn Nets 104-95 in double-overtime at the Barclays Center on Friday night.
Miami's effort, especially after halftime, was much more encouraging than its performance down the stretch in a 102-92 loss to the New York Knicks a night earlier.
With players on both teams wearing jerseys sporting their nickname on the back, Miami used improved second-half defense to fight back in Brooklyn. They Heat even took a 2-point lead with 2:10 remaining in the fourth before the game went to overtime.
Norris Cole, who had a season-high 18 points, hit a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds on the clock to force the second overtime.
With LeBron James on the Heat bench after fouling out, the Nets scored the first 11 points of the second overtime to secure the win.
James scored 36 points before fouling out with 36 seconds left in the first overtime. It was the first time he fouled out of a regular-season game since April 2, 2008, when he was with Cleveland. (Since then, James has fouled out of two playoff games with Miami -- at Boston on June 3, 2012 and at Indiana last May 28.)
King James reached the 30-point plateau for a season-high fourth straight game.
Ray Allen, who started for Dwyane Wade, shot 2 of 14 overall and 0 of 5 from 3-point range. Allen is shooting 20 percent (8 of 40) overall and 14 percent (3 of 21) from long distance in his last six games.
Chris Bosh had 10 rebounds, 10 points and took only 9 shots (hitting 4).
Brooklyn had more second-chance points (17-2) and more rebounds (49-39) than Miami.
The Heat were without Wade (rested knees), Shane Battier (quad strain) and Mario Chalmers (sore Achilles').
The Nets were minus point guard Deron Williams (ankle) and center Brooke Lopez, who's out for the season with a fractured foot.
Miami trailed 76-64 heading into the fourth quarter.
One night after surrendering 59 second-half points in their loss to the Knicks, the Heat gave up 53 points in the first half at Brooklyn and trailed by eight at the half. The Nets shot 57.1 percent during the first 24 minutes.
James went scoreless in the second quarter after scoring 16 in the first.
Brooklyn led 33-32 after one quarter in which James and Joe Johnson put on a shooting clinic.
James hit 5 of 6 shots, including 2 of 3 from long distance. Johnson hit 9 of 10 shots, including all 4 from 3-point range, for 22 points.
With Miami trailing 80-75 and 8:37 left in the fourth, Brooklyn's Mirza Teletovic committed a Flagrant 1 foul on James as the Heat star was driving in the lane.
THE TURNING POINT
A 13-2 run gave Miami 80-79 edge with 7:03 to go in the fourth and set up the frantic finish in regulation and first overtime. But Brooklyn's domination in the second overtime earned the victory.
THE DIFFERENCE MAKER
Joe Johnson. Yes, the Heat held him to 10 points after the first quarter, but his 22 points in the opening period helped build a Nets cushion and also helped build the Nets' confidence.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Heat bench -- Chris Andersen, Michael Beasley and Roger Mason Jr. -- scored a combined 10 points. That was a season low, less than the 13 on Thursday night against the Knicks.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Heat play the third of six straight road games when they visit the Washington Wizards on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
