EPSOM, England (AP) Harzand held off fast-finishing favorite US Army Ranger to win the English Derby on Saturday, earning $1.27 million for his owners from the richest race ever run in Britain.
Ridden by Pat Smullen, Harzand - a 13-2 shot - won by 1 1/2 lengths in front of Queen Elizabeth II and an estimated 125,000 spectators at Epsom racecourse.
US Army Ranger, the 7-2 favorite, was one of five runners in the field from trainer Aidan O'Brien. He was at the back of the 16-horse field for most of the race before launching a late attack on Harzand, who stayed strong in the final furlong.
