Gulfstream to offer 4 no-Lasix races this weekend
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (AP) Gulfstream Park will offer four Lasix-free races this weekend.
All will be over 4-1/2 furlongs and for 2-year-olds, with two of the races on Saturday and the others on Sunday. Gulfstream has been working with Dr. Stephen Selway, who is involved in a study involving juveniles racing with and without Lasix.
The anti-bleeding medication has long been a source of debate in American thoroughbred racing. It's legal at U.S. tracks to administer to horses on a race day, though that's not permitted at most international tracks. Virtually every race in the U.S. includes horses on Lasix.
Selway's study has been backed by Zayat Stables, the owner of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
Gulfstream plans more Lasix-free races for juvenile maidens over six furlongs on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16.
