TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Brett Gardner had a three-run triple in the New York Yankees' 10-7 loss to a Baltimore Orioles' split squad on Wednesday.

Gardner tripled off T.J. McFarland in a four-run second that cut the Yankees' deficit to 7-4. After missing most of last season because of a strained right elbow that required surgery, the speedy Gardner could become a key this season for the Yankees' offense.

New York hit a team-record 245 homers last year but Nick Swisher, Raul Ibanez, Russell Martin and Eric Chavez left as free agents, and Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson will start the season on the disabled list. Just two Yankees on the projected opening-day roster, Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano, topped 20 homers last season.

Steve Pearce, bidding for a backup role with the Orioles, had two hits and three RBIs. Pearce had an RBI double off Nik Turley during a five-run first, then hit a two-run single that made it 7-0 in the second.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Tim Hudson allowed a long home run to Prince Fielder, but Juan Francisco's three-run shot off Rick Porcello helped the Atlanta Braves to a 5-3 victory Wednesday.

Hudson pitched three innings and yielded two runs and two hits. He said afterward he feels he is on target to meeting his opening-day goals.

Porcello, competing for one of the final spots in the Tigers' rotation, allowed three hits in two innings.

Joey Terdoslavich doubled in a run in the sixth inning for the Braves and raised his spring batting average to .429. Jordan Schafer, Chris Johnson, Terdoslavich, and Francisco each had two hits for the Braves.

Reigning AL MVP Miguel Cabrera had a single.

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Outfield prospect George Springer hit a three-run homer off Jeremy Jeffress in the fourth inning and a two-run drive against Claudio Vargas in the fifth, helping the Houston Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-1 Wednesday.

Houston, 29th among the 30 teams in batting average last year, had 18 hits, including two each by Springer, J.D. Martinez, Matt Dominguez and Carlos Corporan. Toronto starter Brad Lincoln was chased two outs into his spring training debut.

Jose Reyes raised his spring training batting average to .625 with three singles. Reyes is 5 for 8 with five singles in three games.

Melky Cabrera, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion were a combined 1-for-9, with Cabrera getting a single.

Lincoln, the loser, allowed four runs, three hits and one walk.

Winner Alex White gave up one hit in two scoreless innings.

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Luke Scott hit an RBI double and a single Wednesday and the Tampa Bay Rays beat A.J. Burnett and the sloppy Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2.

Jose Molina also had two of the Rays' 12 hits.

The Pirates made three errors in the first two innings, which led to three unearned runs.

Right fielder Brad Hawpe let a bloop hit bounce past him, third baseman Pedro Alvarez flubbed a high popup and second baseman Neil Walker overthrew 6-foot-4 first baseman Garrett Jones. A wild pitch by Burnett allowed another run to score.

Burnett had a bumpy spring debut. He allowed four runs and three hits in two innings.

VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Dan Haren allowed a run over two sharp innings in his debut with the Washington Nationals, but the Nathan Eovaldi pitched two hitless innings in his first start to lead the Miami Marlins to a 5-1 victory on Wednesday.

NL Rookie of the Year Bryce Harper cooled off some, going 0 for 2 for the Nationals. He had three hits Tuesday and is 6 for 10 to start spring training.

Haren signed a one-year, $13 million contract this winter with the NL East champions. He allowed two hits, including a leadoff triple to top prospect Christian Yelich, and struck out three.

Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth and first basemen Adam LaRoche went a combined 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in their first outings.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Carlos Beltran hit a two-run double in a four-run third inning, Yadier Molina and John Jay added RBI doubles in the fourth and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the New York Mets 12-4 Wednesday.

The starters in the top five slots in the Cardinals' batting order combined to hit 5-for-10 with four doubles and seven RBIs, and St. Louis finished with 14 hits.

Mets scheduled starter Zack Wheeler was scratched because of a mild oblique strain sustained while swinging a bat in the cage during pregame workouts. Starter Darin Gorski allowed four runs, three hits and three walks in two-plus innings.

Cardinals starter Lance Lynn gave up two runs and four hits in two innings, including John Buck's two-run homer in the second. Michael Wacha, the Cardinals' top selection in last June's amateur draft, followed and allowed one hit in three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- New Phillies center fielder Ben Revere got off to a fast start against his former team with two hits and a steal Wednesday in Philadelphia's 12-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Revere also scored twice. The Twins traded him to the Phillies for pitcher Vance Worley and pitching prospect Alex Meyer during the offseason.

Aaron Hicks, who hopes to inherit Revere's old job, doubled and singled for the Twins. He drove in two runs and scored once. Josh Willingham had three hits for Minnesota and Ryan Doumit homered.

Twins starting pitcher Kevin Correia, who left Fort Myers for San Diego after the start to be with his wife for the birth of their third child, gave up three runs in 2 1-3 innings. He allowed five hits and two walks.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Chris Davis hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles to their fifth straight win to start spring training, 5-3 over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

It's the first time Baltimore, which was using a split-squad against the Red Sox, has won its first five in spring since 2001.

Chris Tillman allowed a hit and two walks in 1 2-3 innings for the Orioles.

Boston brought most of its regulars, but third baseman Will Middlebrooks had a scary moment in the first inning when he appeared to injure his right wrist after swinging at a pitch from Tillman. Middlebrooks, who broke the wrist last Aug. 10, left the game, but said it was a precaution and that he was fine.
