WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Samoa announced the appointment of former long-serving New Zealand head coach Gordon Tietjens as its national rugby sevens coach on Friday.
The 60-year-old Tietjens retired the New Zealand role after the Rio de Janiero Olympics. Tietjens coached New Zealand coach for 22 years, from 1994 to 2016, winning 12 world titles and four Commonwealth Games gold medals.
New Zealand's poor performance at Rio, where it failed to win a medal, hastened his decision to quit.
Kenya had scheduled a news conference Wednesday at which it was expected to announce Tietjens' appointment but the conference was canceled shortly before it was due to begin.
