Gophers' Streveler named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week
MINNEAPOLIS -- Thanks to the work he did with his legs Saturday against San Jose State, Gophers quarterback Chris Streveler was named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week.
Streveler, a redshirt freshman who made his first career start Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium, ran for 161 yards and a touchdown to help lead Minnesota to a 24-7 victory over the Spartans. Though Streveler completed just one pass in seven attempts, he was able to rush for the third-most yards by a Gophers quarterback in school history. Only MarQueis Gray rushed for more, gaining 171 and 167 yards during his career at Minnesota.
Streveler shared the weekly honor with Indiana linebacker Tegray Scales, who had five tackles and a sack as the Hoosiers upset Missouri on Saturday. It's the first time a Gopher won the Freshman of the Week award since quarterback Mitch Leidner did so last year on Sept. 23.
The Gophers open up the Big Ten season this Saturday at Michigan. It remains to be seen whether Streveler or Leidner will be starting. Regardless of which quarterback it is, Minnesota will have a former Big Ten Freshman of the Week under center.
