MINNEAPOLIS — Gophers left-hander Tom Windle is one step closer to his big league dream.
The Los Angeles Dodgers took Windle with the 56th overall pick in the second round of Thursday's draft. Windle was 6-4 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts for the University of Minnesota this year. Earlier this season, Windle tossed a no-hitter in a 3-0 win against Western Illinois.
A graduate of Osseo (Minn.) High School, Windle throws a fastball, slider and changeup. He was drafted out of high school by the White Sox in the 28th round but chose to attend Minnesota.
"I think he has a chance to play the game for a while and has a chance to play at the next level if he stays healthy and continues to develop like he has," Gophers coach John Anderson said earlier this year. "He's got great makeup, great poise on the mound. He's got a quiet confidence to him. I think he's got the intangibles. I think he's got what it takes from the neck up."
