Gophers hockey knocked off by Northeastern, 3-2
The third-ranked Minnesota Gophers men's hockey squad endured a 3-2 defeat at the hands of host Northeastern on Saturday night.
The Gophers (8-4-0 overall) dented the scoreboard first on Saturday, when Justin Kloos tallied a power-play score at 10:17 of the first period.
But the Huskies, a struggling Hockey East squad this season, eventually seized a 2-1 advantage by early in the night's second stanza, when Brendan Collier lit the lamp. Minnesota's Kyle Rau answered in kind with a goal at 10:12 of the second period, but the host Huskies kept nipping away at their nationally ranked opponent.
Northeastern (3-9-1 overall), got the game-winning goal at 17:24 of the third period, when Kevin Roy recorded his third score of the season.
The Huskies outshot the Gophers 40-27 on the night, including 14-6 in the game's first 20 minutes.
Minnesota got two assists from Ben Marshall and a season-high 37 saves from netminder Adam Wilcox in a losing effort.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend, when it visits Michigan State for a two-game, Big Ten series. That will cap a five-game road trip for Minnesota.
