UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The top-ranked Minnesota men's hockey squad survived a scare from host Penn State Sunday night, as the Gophers clawed out a 3-2 victory.
Minnesota (14-2-3 overall, 4-0-1-0 Big Ten) jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 11:34 mark of the second period, when Mike Reilly tallied a goal. However, Penn State, playing in its first-ever home series in Big Ten play, fought back, knotting the score at 2-all by early in the third period.
Minnesota's Ben Marshall scored the game-winner at the 15:59 mark of the final stanza, though, and the visiting Gophers hung on.
The Gophers had 19 shots in the third period alone, and 45 for the game. Minnesota also got a solid showing in the net from goaltender Adam Wilcox, who recorded 28 saves.
Penn State (4-11-1, 0-3-0-0 Big Ten) got a respectable showing from netminder Eamon McAdam, who posted 42 saves. Sunday's crowd at Penn State's new Pegula Ice Arena was announced at 5,999.
