SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Minnesota Gophers men's hockey squad got some revenge Saturday night, posting a hardfought 5-4 victory at Notre Dame.
A night after enduring a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Fighting Irish, the Gophers grinded out a win Saturday thanks in large part to Hudson Fasching, who produced a pair of goals.
The top-ranked Gophers (6-1-1), got the game-winning goal from Jake Bischoff at 8:57 of the third period. Bischoff ripped a low wrister for his second tally of the season.
Third-ranked Notre Dame (7-3-0) got a pair of goals from Minnesota native Mario Lucia, the son of the Minnesota head coach. Yet, Gophers netminder Adam Wilcox did just enough to get the win, recording 29 saves.
Minnesota got early goals from Taylor Cammarata, Fasching and Justin Kloos to seize a 3-1 lead by late in the first period before host Notre Dame closed the game intensely.
Head coach Don Lucia's Gophers won 40 faceoffs on the night; Notre Dame won 29. Minnesota is now 3-1 on the road on the young season.
The Gophers return to action next Friday at 7 p.m., when they host Minnesota State in a game set to be televised on FOX Sports North Plus.
