MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers football team landed a prized recruit Monday, as center Connor Mayes of Texas committed to play for Minnesota.

Scout.com ranks Mayes as a four-star recruit and the top center in the Class of 2014. The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Mayes will be a senior at Van Alstyne (Texas) High School this fall.

Considering the offers Mayes had accumulated from top-tier schools, this is a big get for Jerry Kill and the Gophers. Mayes reportedly had offers from the likes of Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Kansas State and TCU, among other schools.

Ultimately, he chose to head north to Minnesota.

"One of the best decisions I've ever made. I am officially committed to the University of Minnesota. #GopherNation," Mayes tweeted (@PuppyloveMayes) Monday. "Thank you to all the coaches and fans from all the other schools who made my recruiting experience great!"

It’s been a big two days of recruiting for the Gophers football team. One day before Mayes committed to Minnesota, the Gophers landed tight end recruit Gaelin Elmore of Somerset, Wisc. Elmore is a three-star recruit and is ranked by Scout.com as the 17th-best tight end in the Class of 2014. He had offers from his hometown Badgers, as well as Nebraska, Michigan State, Indiana, North Dakota and Iowa State.
