Go figure! QB competition brewing in New York

BY foxsports • April 26, 2013

Mark Sanchez, you’re officially on notice. Despite a rocky 2012 season, which included getting benched for Greg McElroy, Sanchez will be competing with a quartet of QBs for the starting job because the franchise spent a second-round pick on former West Virginia QB Geno Smith. Smith immediately took a page out of Tim Tebow’s book in an interview with ESPN saying, “I’m excited to be a Jet.” He better be. The Jets hired a new offensive coordinator this offseason in Marty Mornhinweg and he will install a West Coast scheme. He hopes to revive an offense that finished 30th in the NFL in 2012. Good luck. Let’s take a look at the Jets’ QB depth chart and make a case for each player. Then, you decide who you think will start Week 1 against the Bucs.Mark Sanchez Sanchez was a mess last year. That’s putting it lightly. He got a contract extension, his job security threatened, was a victim of the “Butt-fumble” and benched all in the same year. It’s make or break time for Sanchez. Rex Ryan is on his last leg in New York and won’t be shy yanking Sanchez if he wins the job. Geno Smith The fan base will be begging for Geno if/when Sanchez throws his first pick. Smith slid all the way to the second round, but New York got some good value. Is he ready to step in and assume the face-of-the-franchise responsibilities? Tim Tebow This guy has been trade bait all offseason, but no one has bit. Will the Jets release Tebow and take the cap hit on the chin? It could be worth it to steer clear of the circus that played a big role in derailing the team last season. Who are we kidding? It’ll be a mess regardless. David Garrard Garrard could be the steady hand that keeps this team afloat until Geno is properly groomed to be the starting QB. His veteran leadership is something the young players can learn from and he is a good player to have in the QB meeting room. Greg McElroy McElroy got some playing time last season, but he looks to be a longshot to get the starting gig (or even make the team) in September.
