During Wednesday's Indians-Red Sox game came news that Don Zimmer passed away at the age of 83. Indians designated hitter Jason Giambi, who was with the Yankees when Zimmer was the bench coach, remembered him fondly.
"It is a big loss for the baseball community. He was a great human being and great for the game," Giambi said after the game, which the Indians won 7-4 in 12 innings.
Despite his success as a manager, Zimmer is remembered by some for the fracas he had with Pedro Martinez during the 2003 American League Championship Series. Despite being 72 at the time, Zimmer charged after Martinez before Martinez threw him on the ground.
Said Giambi about the incident: "We kind of had some blood that year from guys hitting guys. It happened so fast that a lot of us didn't realize until later on that we saw Zim on the ground. He had a lot of passion, he loved guys who played on his team."
