Georgia State bounces 3-seed Baylor on Hunter's GW triple
Well, so much for Georgia State not having enough firepower or size or experience to do damage in the NCAA tournament.
The Panthers, who garnered more fame on Sunday for their coach tearing his Achilles during the postgame celebration than the actual tourney berth, scored the final 13 points on Thursday to pull off a shocking 57-56 win over Baylor in the Round of 64.
GSU's triumph marked the second time on Thursday a 14-seed had knocked off a No. 3 -- with both toppled favorites coming from the Big 12 Conference (Iowa State falling to UAB; Baylor losing to Georgia State).
Adding to the Panthers' excitement, R.J. Hunter -- the son of head coach Tony Hunter -- scored 12 points during his team's exhilarating final spurt, including the game-winning three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left (via SBNation):
Just a few minutes prior, Baylor (24-10) seemed in total control of the game, leading 56-44, shooting 45-plus percent from the field and being nearly perfect from the charity stripe.
But everything unraveled after that for Baylor, which didn't hit a field goal in the final 5:40 and was foiled by a late missed free throw from guard Kenny Chery -- the Bears' best foul-line shooter (83 percent) -- whose errant attempt afforded Georgia State a chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds.
Cue the younger Hunter, who got off a clean, but daunting game-winner at the end -- the product of a somewhat shaky posssession for Georgia State, which could not get paint penetration off the dribble.
That forced Hunter (16 points, three rebounds) to bury just his second three-pointer of the day -- and easily the greatest moment in Georgia State basketball history.
Adding to the legend ... coach Ron Hunter fell off his chair many times during the second half -- including right after R.J.'s history-maker.
With the harrowing win, Georgia State (25-9) will face the winner of Xavier (6-seed) and 11-seed Ole Miss on Saturday.
