PLANICA, Slovenia (AP) Severin Freund of Germany won the overall ski jump World Cup title by the slimmest of margins Sunday, claiming the crystal globe on a tiebreaker rule after tying for points in the season-long standings with Peter Prevc of Slovenia.
Freund was only seventh in the season-ending ski flying competition in Planica and looked set to lose out to Prevc, who led after the first round. But another Slovenian, Jurij Tepes, soared 244 meters in the second round for the longest effort of the day, winning the event and denying his countryman the overall title by knocking Prevc down to second place.
That meant Freund and Prevc both finished with 1,729 points in the standings, but the German had more wins with nine.
Freund said ''it's satisfying that I won the crystal globe, but with the exact same number of points we could have had two men on top of the podium.''
