Frankel, who retired last month with an unbeaten record, is among the five nominations for Europe's Horse of the Year at the Cartier Racing Awards.

Cirrus Des Aigles, Excelebration, Nathaniel and Camelot are the other horses on the short list but it will be a major surprise if Frankel isn't awarded the accolade for the second straight year, having ended his career with 14 straight wins.

Five of those came in a stellar 2012, when the Henry Cecil-trained colt maintained his No. 1 position in the world thoroughbred rankings.

The ceremony will take place in London on Tuesday, when nine awards are up for grabs.
