Survive and advance is a popular sports mantra normally saved for the month of March and the madness that comes with it.
But thanks to the rapid growth of the NFL and fantasy football, games like FOX Fantasy Survivor can feed your craving for “win or go home” competition seven months early.
Over 25,000 football fans signed up and participated in the FOX Fantasy Survivor game last season. The hope is, with cash prizes on the line, we can eclipse that mark in 2011.
The premise is simple: pick one (1) team who you believe is going to win that week. The survivor catch remains that once you pick a team to win, you can’t pick that team again for the rest of the season. The good news is, even if you lose, you are still eligible to win cash prizes.
To assist you with your survivor selections, the FOXSports.com’s fantasy football staff will provide you their picks for the week.
Just remember the mantra: survive and advance. In a couple months, you could be $2,000 richer.
Week 1 Recap
The fantasy department escaped Week 1 with a 3-1 FOX Survivor record. Thanks to an underwhelming performance by the Kansas City Chiefs at home, Beall was saddled with the lone loss. It’s hard for a playmaker like Jamaal Charles to erupt out of the backfield when his team buries itself into a 20-nothing hole before halftime.
As for Halpin, Harmon and Fowler, the trio needed Arizona and San Diego to rally in the second half to survive and advance.
Remember FOX Survivor allows participants to lose up to three times and still be eligible for prizing. So, if you lost Week 1, shake it off and jump back in the pool.
Week 2 Survivor Picks
Harmon and Beall – Pittsburgh
Editor’s Commentary – The best medicine for Pittsburgh’s Week 1 wounds could be Seattle traveling to the Steel City.
Granted, the Steelers turned the ball over SEVEN times against the Ravens, but the Seahawks couldn’t manage to beat a San Francisco team that finished 1-12 on third downs and finished with 209 total yards.
Tarvaris Jackson fumbled three times and lost the ball twice as he adjusts to life as the Seahawks QB 1.
Pittsburgh’s double-digit point spread screams gimmie at Heinz Field.
Halpin – New York Giants
Editor’s Commentary – The injury plagued Giants can empathize with the Rams. St. Louis’ roster turned into a M.A.S.H unit by the end of the Sunday’s game. The biggest loss comes in the backfield as it doesn’t sound like Steven Jackson’s quad strain will be healed in time for this Monday night’s contest. Sam Bradford is also dealing with an injured finger. The Rams are beat up.
As bad as the Giants looked against the Redskins, they have been known to bounce back right quick. The health of Hakeem Nicks (knee) is a concern, but Mario Manningham has stepped up in the past and finished the 2010 season with nine touchdowns.
Fowler – New York Jets
Editor’s Commentary – Luke McCown will not strike fear in the Jets’ secondary. The lack of a passing attack and well-known fact that Maurice Jones-Drew (97 yards, TD vs TEN) is option 1 and 1a will allow New York to load up the box and force McCown (eight career starts) to beat them.
If Darrelle Revis can shut down Mike Thomas (eight receptions and 11 targets Week 1), it will be a long day for the Jags.
