FOX Sports Wisconsin Midweek Stock Report for Feb. 24
Every Wednesday, FOX Sports Wisconsin takes a look at which athletes' stock is trending up and whose is trending down.
In other words, who is making a meteoric rise, and who is quickly plummeting.
With that in mind, let's "take stock" of the current sports scene in Wisconsin, shall we?
Ethan Happ Wisconsin forward: After hitting a bit of a rut with a combined 24 points over four games, Happ has gotten his second wind. After scoring 18 points against Michigan State, Happ had 20 points, 12 rebounds and a season-high six steals against Illinois.
Sean Nolin, Brewers pitcher: Nolin went from being designated for assignment by Oakland to being just one of two left-handers on Milwaukee's 40-man roster. The other is Will Smith, who might just be the Brewers closer. A decent camp could easily land Nolin on the Opening Day roster.
The Bucks young forwards: It was quite a week for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker. The Greek Freak averaged 21.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game and had the first triple-double of his career (and the first one by a Milwaukee player in nearly four years). Parker, as we hinted at last week, used the All-Star break to gain some new life: He averaged 22.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game, and set a career high with 28 points against Atlanta. Own the future, indeed.
Wisconsin's men's basketball team: A seven-game win streak came to an end at Michigan State and then the team came out flat against a bad Illinois team before staging a nice second-half comeback. Nevertheless, it was not a great showing at home and against a good team the Badgers would have gotten flattened. However, neither the loss or the win really affected Wisconsin's standing for an NCAA tournament bid. Check back next week after games against Iowa and Michigan, though.
Nigel Hayes' shot: The Wisconsin junior forward did not have a good week in trying to get the ball in the basket. He was a putrid 1 of 13 from the field against Michigan State, including missing all five of his 3-point attempts, and made only 3 of 6 free-throw attempts. He improved against Illinois, but still made only 4 of 10 shots (1 of 4 from 3), although he did make 8 of 9 free-throw attempts. This came on the heels of a 4 of 12 effort against Maryland. On the season, Hayes is shooting just 39.9 percent from the field, a far cry from the 51.0 percent and 49.7 percent he had in his first two seasons at Wisconsin.
Wisconsin's women's hockey team: The Badgers didn't exactly enter the WCHA playoffs on a high, losing two games last weekend to Minnesota. The good news is Wisconsin still finished in first place in the standings -- by 1 point -- and will play Minnesota State, which was 0-25-3-0 in conference play in the opening series.
