Losing projected starting quarterback Ryan Williams to an ACL injury this spring left the University of Miami football team with little experience at the position entering the 2014 season.
The Hurricanes did their best to rectify that situation by announcing Sunday the transfer of Jake Heaps from the University of Kansas.
Heaps, who is set to graduate this month, will be a fifth-year senior. He spent his junior year with the Jayhawks, completing 128 for 261 passes for 1,414 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 11 games (nine starts). He was a team captain.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder pounder from Sammamish, Washington, originally played for Brigham Young University his freshman and sophomore years.
He set every program record for freshmen, including passing yards (2,316), touchdowns (15) and wins (six). Heaps was named New Mexico Bowl MVP. As a sophomore, he threw for 1,452 yards and nine scores in nine games (six starts). He sat out the 2012 season per NCAA transfer rules.
Other players in contention for the quarterback job will be redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen, sophomore Gray Crow and incoming freshmen Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier.
