Former Cowboy Everson Walls 'very upset' with DeMarco Murray's departure

Running back DeMarco Murray's signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday not only agitated Cowboys fans, but also former Dallas players. Count ex-cornerback Everson Walls as one of those dismayed.

Walls, who spent nine seasons with the Cowboys from 1981-89, was in downtown Dallas at an event honoring retiring NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon.

"I'm upset," Walls said. "I'm very upset about it. And I just said it on the radio earlier. I think the Cowboys just lost their chance to go back to the playoffs this year."

Missing the playoffs after a qualifying season would be a setback for head coach Jason Garrett's "process." The Cowboys have not made consecutive postseasons since 2006-07.

Walls stated that the only running back who could replace Murray's league-leading 1,845 yards would be someone, "whose first name starts with 'A' and his last name with 'P.'" More importantly, Walls doubts anyone can protect quarterback Tony Romo the way Murray did.

"He needed a running back that could take the load off of him, not just an offensive line, but a running back that is heads-up to be the outlet when he's in trouble, to be the guy that protects him on a blitz," said Walls.

"With DeMarco Murray gone, I think Tony Romo's career is going to be a lot more difficult than it was last year."

Since 2011, when was Murray among the inactives, Romo led Dallas to fives wins against six losses. On the flip side, Murray and the Cowboys went 0-2 when Romo was unable to suit up. Football fans will find out in 2015 who needs who more.
