Floyd, Parks combine on 1-hitter as UA beats up on Stanford
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Michelle Floyd and Trish Parks combined to allow one hit while the offense got hot in Arizona's 11-0 five-inning victory over Stanford at Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday night.
It was the opener of a three-game series.
Arizona (35-12, 10-6 Pac-12) had two more home runs than the Cardinal (16-30, 1-15 Pac-12) had base hits. Ashleigh Hughes, Mo Mercado and Chelsea Goodacre all went deep in the game. Hughes' two-run second-inning homer was the first of her career.
Hughes' long ball made her the 11th Wildcat to hit a home run this season, the most since 12 players homered in 2010. Arizona has a conference-high 79 home runs.
The one hit allowed was Arizona's fewest of the year.
Floyd (18-7) tossed three hitless innings before Erin Ashby led off the fourth with a single. Parks hurled a perfect fifth to end the game. Floyd walked three and struck out two in four innings, while Parks struck out one.
Five Wildcats contributed a pair of RBI in the game. Chelsea Suitos and Katiyana Mauga picked up two-run singles, while Mercado and Hughes each connected on two-run home runs. Goodacre picked up her two RBI with a solo homer and a first-inning double.
Goodacre has a Pac-12-high 70 RBIs, one off the NCAA lead.
The Wildcats scored their 11 runs on 11 hits. UA also took advantage of six Stanford walks and a trio of Cardinal errors. Arizona stranded seven.
UA opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. After Stanford starter Kylie Sorenson (4-8) retired the first two batters, back-to-back errors on routine plays gave Arizona a 1-0 lead. Goodacre followed with a run-scoring double to put Arizona on top 2-0.
Arizona doubled its lead in the second. Lauren Young knocked a one-out single before Hughes homered to right.
Mandie Perez led off the third with a walk before Mercado homered to put Arizona up 6-0. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Mauga, who singled through the left side to score two and give the Cats an 8-0 lead.
In the fourth, after Floyd's no-hit bid was broken up, Goodacre led off the inning with her 19th home run of the season. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with two down for Suitos, who singled to right to bring in two and give Arizona an 11-0 lead.
Parks faced the minimum in the fifth to secure the win.
