Flip Saunders gives players Wolves coin for good luck
MINNEAPOLIS -- Coming off a 31-51 season ravaged by injuries, it's apparent the Timberwolves require a reversal of fortunes this season.
Like the coach he used to be, Flip Saunders tried to do his superstitious part Monday, a day before All Hallows' Eve.
Minnesota's president of basketball operations handed each player, coach and staff member a two-sided coin to "symbolize unity," according to the team. Each side bears a different Timberwolves logo, and the transcription "We're Ready" stretches across the top on one side.
It's a good-luck charm that players can keep in a safe place and use as a reminder of their goals this season, including breaking the NBA's longest active playoff drought.
Their quest to that end begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Orlando.
These are the kind of preseason, opening-day type things coaches at every level do in attempt to add a little extra incentive. With the way things have gone around the Twin Cities the past decade, Saunders apparently thinks the team he used to coach needs all the help it can get.
Even if it means some serendipity.
