Fielder smacks long homer in Texas win
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Prince Fielder gave Texas Rangers fans a glimpse of what they hope to see on a regular basis this season at Globe Life Park in Arlington.
Fielder smacked a 424-foot homer in the first inning against the Quintana Roo Tigers in a 7-4 Texas win over the minor-league team from Mexico.
The homer was Fielder's fourth of the spring, giving him a share of the team lead with Michael Choice.
The Rangers played their regulars for five innings. The club will head to San Antonio for a two-game series against Houston before returning home for Monday's season opener against Philadelphia.
Opening Day starter Tanner Scheppers worked an inning Thursday, allowing one run on one hit.
Fielder's homer was one of two hit by the Rangers Thursday. Donnie Murphy, who was picked up off waivers Wednesday, made a quick first impression by hitting a three-run homer in the second inning. Murphy, who could end up being the Opening Day second baseman for Texas, doubled in his first at-bat and went 2 for 3.
"Good first day as a Texas Ranger," manager Ron Washington said. "He did everything that you could possibly do."
