Field, Heyer earn Pac-12 weekly recognition
TUCSON, Ariz. – Fresh off a weekend road sweep of California, the 14th-ranked Arizona baseball team swept the Pac-12 Conference honors for Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Junior right-hander Kurt Heyer was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career. Meanwhile, sophomore left fielder Johnny Field was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Heyer turned in his fifth complete game of the season in Friday’s 3-1 series-opening victory over California. He scattered five hits and allowed no earned runs over nine innings, improving his record to 9-2, with a 2.28 ERA.
Field hit safely in each of the three games, collecting seven hits and scoring four runs. He also walked twice, hit his second home run of the season and had a .643 on-base percentage. He improved his batting average to .378, second best in the Pac-12, and leads the conference with a .484 on-base percentage.
The Wildcats improved to 33-15 and 16-8 in Pac-12 play, trailing only Oregon (37-14, 8-8). They are back on the road for four games this week: A non-conference game at Arizona State on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., and a three-game series at USC starting on Friday.
