Fantasy Basement: Week 2

Published Sep. 10, 2014 3:10 p.m. ET

The Fantasy Basement is a weekly piece that provides fantasy advice on lineup calls, sleepers, waiver-wire moves and rookie spotlights, along with the occasional ramble or two. Why “Fantasy Basement” you ask? There is a common belief that sports writers dwell in their childhood cellars, that the institution promotes arrested development. Um…why is that such a bad thing? Who wouldn’t enjoy coming home to fresh-baked cookies and having their laundry done?…Anyway, enjoy!

We all know what Larry Fitzgerald is capable of, but ARI seems to be neglecting him. And the rumors about his contract aren't helping. He got dropped on the waivers today and I want to say he's still worth picking up. (I would have to drop Greg Jennings or Rams D) Do you agree? Thanks!

In case you missed it – and since it’s dealing with the Cardinals, you probably did - Fitzgerald’s dad blamed his son’s rough display Monday night on a concerted effort from the Cardinals to freeze the receiver out of the game plan. As Fitzgerald acknowledged himself, no matter what happens in 2014, his large cap number is going to warrant attention. Any claims that the team is tenaciously ignoring Fitzgerald to justify his offseason release or contract restructuring is absurd. Besides, do you honestly think Carson Palmer is good enough to snub Fitzgerald and get away with it? Hell, Palmer doesn’t know where the ball is going half the time, let alone the identity of its intended target.

Fitzgerald merits a roster spot over Jennings, but one receiver who justifies the grab over both players is the much-maligned Josh Gordon. With the NFLPA board weighing a new drug policy – an issue that DID hit a snag this week – there’s a genuine chance last year’s leading receiver suits up this fall. Even if that day is a month away, Gordon’s value exceeds almost every alternative on the market. If Gordon is still available in your league, clear the necessary room on your bench.
