FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who interviewed with the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, refused to discuss his interview when he met on Sunday for his weekly media availability with reporters.
"Yeah, I'm going to pass on comment about that and I'll talk about anything offensively you want to talk about," Mularkey said.
The Denver Broncos also asked Mularkey to interview for their vacant job. After initially agreeing, Mularkey decided that two interviews would be too much for him as the Falcons, the NFC's top seed, prepare for their home playoff game Saturday.
Mularkey, 49, reportedly agreed to do the interview with Cleveland and not Denver because Cleveland asked permission first. Mularkey was asked on Sunday when he decided to do only one interview.
"I don't even know what time frame," he said. "I just know this has been very important to me. It's important to our team, and I'm not sure when that decision came down."
Mularkey was 14-18 as head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2004-05. A former NFL tight end who served at Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator before taking the Buffalo job, Mularkey has received much credit for the development of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan in his three years in Atlanta since the Falcons drafted Ryan in 2008. Both Denver (Tim Tebow) and Cleveland (Colt McCoy) are invested in young quarterbacks as high-round picks as each attempts to rebuild into a winner.
