SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Former major league infielder Josh Booty won a reality television show by throwing the best knuckleball, earning him a spot in spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 37-year-old Booty is set to report to camp Friday with a non-roster invitation. He met Thursday with Diamondbacks announcer Tom Candiotti, a longtime knuckleballer in the majors, at the team's spring training facility, Salt River Fields.
The show, televised on the MLB Network, was called "The Next Knuckler." Booty, a former LSU quarterback who played 13 games with the Marlins from 1996-98, defeated former Georgia quarterback David Greene in Thursday night's series finale, which featured each contestant pitching
against junior college hitters in a three-inning game.
Booty and Greene were among five former college quarterbacks in the competition. The others were Doug Flutie, Ryan Perrilloux and Booty's
brother, John David Booty.
