Erickson's return the right thing for ASU

There's little doubt that these days, Sun Devil nation is divided in its support for head coach Dennis Erickson.
The prospect of a third consecutive losing season (for the first time since 1947) is just one loss away from reality, and that is fueling a lot of support for a change at the top. Close losses, namely five games decided by a combined 20 points, have planted serious seeds of doubt about the future of this program under the current regime.
The faction in support of Erickson realizes that progress is being made. The frustrating results of the 2010 campaign are necessary growing pains for a program on the verge of success and, in many ways, are not much different from the experiences of the 1995 version of the maroon and gold. A year later, that team finished with an 11-1 record and a Rose Bowl appearance.
Arizona State athletic director Lisa Love last week put all rumors about Erickson's future to rest, essentially stating that Erickson will return in 2011. And her boss, school president Dr. Michael Crow, echoed those exact sentiments just a couple of days later.
