England wins toss, bats in day-night test vs West Indies
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) England captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat against West Indies on Thursday in the first day-night test to be played in England.
England and West Indies will open their three-match series at Edgbaston with the first test played under lights and with a pink ball since Australia beat Pakistan in Brisbane in December last year. It's the fifth day-night test to be played, and the first outside of Australia and the United Arab Emirates.
West Indies has played one day-night test before, losing to Pakistan in Dubai last year. It's England's first foray into day-night test cricket.
England made just one change to the team that sealed a series victory over South Africa this month, with Mark Stoneman given a debut to open the batting alongside Alastair Cook and a chance to solve one of England's big problem areas. Stoneman is the 12th player England has tried out as a partner for Cook since Andrew Strauss' retirement.
Seamer Toby Roland-Jones kept his place in the bowling attack ahead of the fit-again Chris Woakes.
West Indies left out quick bowler Shannon Gabriel, with captain Jason Holder saying he is not quite ready to return from injury. Batsman Kyle Hope was selected for his test debut, with his brother Shai also in the team.
The series is England's last before the Ashes in Australia starting in November.
