RAJKOT, India (AP) England declared their second innings against India at 260-2 on Sunday, setting a 310-run target for the hosts on the final day of the first test between the teams.
India reached 49-2 in 18 overs before breaking for tea. Murali Vijay was 29 not out, while Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 2.
Earlier in the day, Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed notched the highest opening stand by an English pair ever in India, scoring 180 runs to boost the tourists' chances of victory in the test.
The pair surpassed the previous high of 178 runs set by Graeme Fowler and Tim Robinson in Chennai in 1985.
Cook also became the first English batsman to score five hundreds in India, reaching his 30th test century off 194 balls. He was finally dismissed when he was caught in the deep in the 76th over off Ravichandran Ashwin (1-63) on 130. England then declared its innings.
The 19-year-old Hameed also set an individual mark, scoring the highest total for an English teenager in test cricket with his 82. The previous record was 74 runs by Jack Crawford against South Africa in 1906.
Hameed was caught out and bowled off Amit Mishra (2-38) in the 59th over.
India started off its innings slowly, losing Gautam Gambhir (0) early when he was caught at second slip off Chris Woakes (1-6).
Vijay then added 47 runs for the second wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara (18). Adil Rashid (1-5) trapped Pujara lbw just before tea.
