Fall camp has given way to real preparation for each team's Week 1 opponent, but you're not alone if trying to piece together the Big 12's quarterback situations makes your head spin.

A lot's happened since players reported in early August. Here's how each Big 12 team's quarterback situation looks heading into Week 1.

Baylor: Bryce Petty was assumed the starter after last season and backup Seth Russell never really challenged in the spring. Coach Art Briles isn't shying away from the lofty expectations for the fourth-year junior who waited his turn behind Nick Florence and Robert Griffin III. "Bryce, a reasonable expectation, first thing that popped into my mind is break every Baylor record there is offensively," Briles said at Big 12 Media Days last month, "which is what we expect him to do and what he plans to do."

Iowa State: Sam Richardson took over the starting role for the final two games of 2012 and after Jared Barnett transferred in January, he's taken over a leadership role for the Cyclones. Grant Rohach will serve as Richardson's backup.

Kansas: Jake Heaps sat out last season and worked with the scout team after transferring from BYU. The No. 1 quarterback in the 2010 recruiting class easily surpassed Michael Cummings, who ended 2012 as the Jayhawks starter. Heaps has been KU's official starter since before spring practice even began.

Kansas State: Wildcats coach Bill Snyder officially announced juco transfer Jake Waters will start Friday night's game against North Dakota State, but added that speedy sophomore Daniel Sams will also play. "He invested himself and he truly worked at it extremely hard and did above and beyond what he was asked for," Snyder said of Waters. "He invested a lot of his time and showed a degree of consistency that helped him and helped us." Snyder says he doesn't know how much Sams will play yet. Just like any position, it could be five snaps or 50, he said.

Oklahoma: Bob Stoops announced last week that redshirt freshman Trevor Knight beat out Blake Bell, who most assumed would replace four-year starter Landry Jones. Bell rushed for 24 touchdowns in the past two seasons as the namesake of the Belldozer short-yardage formation, which Stoops hinted will still be utilized during the season.

Oklahoma State: In the middle of spring practice, Mike Gundy said he wouldn't talk about his QBs again until after the season opener against Mississippi State. Last Thursday, however, Gundy reneged on that spring claim, saying he felt "obligated" to play both QBs and that neither would be a backup. The basic definition of "backup" disagrees with Gundy there, but rumors of a major push from J.W. Walsh leaves plenty of doubt as to who will start Saturday's game in Houston against the Bulldogs.

Texas:
Junior David Ash will enter his second season as Texas' full-time starter, and Case McCoy will serve as his backup. Tyrone Swoopes was one of just three true freshmen on Texas' Week 1 depth chart, and Mack Brown says he wants Swoopes to play some after he heals up from a hamstring injury.

TCU: Casey Pachall returned, but he's been anything but handed the starting job for the Frogs. Trevone Boykin showed major improvement from a bumpy 2012 and the two will both serve as team captains and come out for the coin toss on Saturday at AT&T Stadium against No. 12 LSU. Gary Patterson hasn't tipped his hand as to who will start, but says "We have a plan" for how much both will play. "

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders likely have the most complex quarterback situation in the league. Michael Brewer aggravated a back injury during fall camp and coach Kliff Kingsbury says he's "day-to-day" and hasn't been ruled out for Friday night's game at SMU. For now, Kingsbury hasn't made any announcements as to which true freshman will fill in for Brewer in the likely scenario he's not healthy enough to play. Davis Webb challenged Brewer during the spring, but walk-on Baker Mayfield has forced coaches to think twice with a strong showing in fall camp.

West Virginia: Coach Dana Holgorsen admitted it wasn't practical for three QBs to get first-team reps, so he eliminated Ford Childress from the race. Junior Paul Millard served as Geno Smith's backup the past two seasons and will try to beat out Florida State transfer Clint Trickett, who transferred in over the summer and has reportedly earned the lion's share of first-team reps during scrimmages. Holgorsen wanted to have a starter named by now, but admitted on Monday he wasn't as antsy as he thought he'd be by now.
