D'Onofrio, Gamble earn first-team Big Sky honors

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Northern Arizona senior captain Alana D'Onofrio and sophomore Cierra Gamble were first-team selections on the All-Big Sky soccer team. They were two of eight Lumberjacks honored by the conference.

D'Onofrio was a part of an NAU defense that gave up only 0.94 goals per game. The captain from Pleasanton, Calif. was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week twice this season and recorded an assist against Southern Utah.

Gamble, from Corona, calif., shared the Big Sky's Golden Boot award as she tied for the conference lead with 13 points (four goals, five assists) during conference play.

Sophomore forward Haley Wingender from Henderson, Nev., was a second-team selection. She had two game-winning goals and tied for the team lead in goals scored.

Five Lumberjacks earned honorable mention: Senior forward Elinor Priest, freshman defender Danny Muniz, junior defenders Diane Buzzard and Sarah Tarver, and senior goalkeeper Lauren Weaver.

These eight players and the rest of the Lumberjacks (11-4-3) will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 7 in the Big Sky Championships in Portland, Ore. NAU is seeded second and play No. 3 seed Weber State (9-4-4) in its semifinal match at 1 p.m. The Wildcats posted a 2-1 overtime victory over the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff during the regular season.

Portland State hosts Northern Colorado in the other semifinal.
